256 lozenge GIVEAWAY

I recently posted a picture of my Niigata Traveler quilt, which my husband and I will be taking on our trip to Japan this month to present to our hosts in Niigata.

In response to this blog post about the trip, my blog buddy, Zenia Renee (A Quilted Passion) mentioned that she wanted to try the quilt pattern. Being sorely holiday-delinquent toward her, I leapt into action that night and literally! cranked out 256 red/orange/purple lozenges using my Accuquilt Go! Baby machine. (Red is her favorite color.)

It got me to thinking, though. If I'm lucky enough to get to go to Japan, I should spread the luck far and wide! So that's why I'm offering a 256-lozenge GIVEAWAY. That, plus 2.5 yards of background fabric, is enough to make this 72" x 72" quilt top.

Here are the rules. In the comments, tell me what color range you would use to make a Niigata Traveler quilt. Be as specific as you can in describing the colors, and feel free to rename it accordingly. Just for fun, tell me what background color(s) you would use, too.

I'll consult my stash, and the color range that both suits my supply and sounds delicious will get the nod. I'll cut 256 + lozenges and put them in the mail. And, in the next few days, I'll post instructions for making the basic block.

Even if you don't win, you can bookmark my blog (however you do that), and have the benefit of dozens of photos taken at the Tokyo Great International Quilt Festival and throughout the rest of the Quilters Express tour of Japan.

Happy Quilting!

  1. Your quilt is beautiful, and I'm sure your hosts will appreciate such an incredible gift! I used to live in Japan growing up, and am looking forward to your pictures. The colors I would choose to make this quilt in would be raspberry, light pink, red, light blue, grass green, teal, brown, gold and cream, in any and all values. I would pick cream as a background. The shape of the stars and diamonds are vaguely reminicent of string wrapped balls hung for New Years in Japan. Thanks for such a generous giveaway! sarah@forrussia.org

  2. The quilt has that sophisticated look, that "something special" which I really like.I'm sure they will adore it in Japan!
I see it on a rather intense warm grey background, in quite bright purlpe-mauve/lilac range of colours. Or completely white-black range of tones on a plain grey background, with emphasis on geometry.

  3. Beautiful classic looking quilt! I think I would make it in a darker brown background with turquoise, white, sage green, and maybe a hint of red. Japan sounds like a great trip!

  4. I would go with shades of navy, lime green and pink- very Palm Beach to suit my new life here in Florida. Drawing inspiration from Lilly Pulitzer! Either a white, pale aqua, or very pale grey background. Perhaps some flamingos on the back for some true Florida kitsch!
Can't wait for the instructions-never tried this shape before. Have an amazing trip!!!!

  8. Your quilt is beautiful. I absolutely love the reds you picked. You can't beat a red quilt, it's always a favorite of mine. I have been working with Blue, green and ecru or beige a lot lately, reminds me of Parrots. I will be following you a lot in the future. You do Grand work.

  10. I would make it in orange, grey, navy and light blue. I find these colours very refreshing at the moment. I think I'd use a white background. And I'd call it...I have no idea! I'm terrible at naming quilts!!

  11. I would make the quilt in a colorway similar to what you show in your photo. I love the quietness in the quilt colors. I love all colors of fabric, and my current favorite patterns focus on diamonds. I'd love to make your lozenge quilt...I'd call it "Love Diamonds"

    1. Thanks for bookmarking my blog! One of the Kaffe Fassett fabrics I use has exactly the combination you describe, with maybe a "hint of chartreuse" rather than a "pop of lime green", but the same idea!

  13. I would make the background white and then each "circle" of diamond shapes around the stars a grouping of different bright colors (red, yellow, orange, blue, green, turquoise, purple, pink, and metallics?) to represent many different colored gemstones. I think I would call it Different Facets. My husband and son learned to cut gems together when my son was really struggling with depression as a teenager. It would really represent taking the worst of times and reshaping them into something beautiful. (By the way, my son is now 26 and doing great!)

  16. So fun to travel and what a lovely present to bring, I am sure they will be thrilled. The plus, you will have extra room in your bags to bring fabric home after gifting! I would make mine in many shades of blue, teal and green batiks to match the colors of the sea with sand as the background. I would name it "Beach Traveler" in honor of the places I love to visit!

An awesome quilt for sure! I have a Go Baby, which die did you use?
If I am chosen, I would like bright colours like lime green, orange, medium purple, red, yellow and similar colours! I would probably use some sort of black or dark grey as background to make the brights really pop!!!

    1. It is a diamond die. Not sure what else it is called. It is a 60-degree diamond (as opposed to 45-degree, which would make a star quilt).

  23. Best wishes for a great trip to Japan. My husband and I visited there in 2012 to see our son play in the Ultimate Frisbee World Championships. He was playing for Australia! (A little bit of pride and promotion for the sport.) Nobody in Australia knows what the sport is.
I would use shades of blue and turquoise with a touch of red for a beachy feel. I think the background would be white for a fresh clean modern look.

  24. Your quilt is quite beautiful! I am excited to learn how you pieced it together. I would make it up in teal, coral or pink, and shades of tan. The punch of color would be the background color, I'm thinking navy. I am inspired by the quilt on the cover of John Q. Adam's book, Beyond Neutral.

    Have a wonderful trip!
